Situated in the heart of the Great Lakes region along the beautiful Detroit River, Wayne County encompasses 43 distinct communities including the automotive capital of the world – Detroit. It is one of the most diverse counties in the United States: a place where different cultures come together to offer a truly cosmopolitan experience.
Wayne County offers a first-class business environment, a top-rated international airport, diverse residential areas, expansive parks, and a multitude of recreational and cultural activities. It is home to several major universities including Wayne State, the University of Michigan-Dearborn, and the University of Detroit plus several award-winning secondary and primary schools, as well as numerous community colleges and vocational schools.
Detroit’s crown jewel, the Fox Theatre, has played host to some of the biggest names in show business and holds its ground as one of the top-grossing theaters of its size in the nation. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is the fourth oldest symphony orchestra in the United States. Centrally located at the Max M. Fisher Theater in Midtown Detroit, the DSO also hosts special performances throughout the region. Wayne County is also home to the Michigan Opera Theater and dozens of theaters, art galleries and concert halls. With hundreds of musical and cultural events every year, Wayne County is Michigan’s cultural epicenter.
Wayne County is also home to several world-class museums. The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village in Dearborn offers a rich and diverse variety of exhibits, demonstrations, programs and reenactments. The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) has been a beacon of culture for the Detroit area for well over a century. The DIA includes more than 100 galleries, a 1,150-seat auditorium, a 380-seat recital hall, an art reference library, and a state-of-the-art conservation laboratory. It is located in Detroit’s Midtown district, also home to Wayne State University, the Detroit Medical Center and numerous retail and dining spots.
Wayne County operates 12 parks and two public golf courses including Hines Park which stretches from Dearborn Heights west to Northville. Belle Isle Park is the third largest island park in the United States and features the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, a waterslide, and a par 3 golf course. Belle Isle is also a popular spot for picnics and family gatherings and is home to the Detroit Yacht Club.
